37th MILO Marathon: The Challenge to Keep the Spirit Alive

The National MILO Marathon is an annual marathon event open to amateur and professional runners. From its humble beginnings in 1974 as a single marathon race in Metro Manila attended by 747 participants, the National MILO Marathon has grown to be the biggest, longest, grandest national running event in the country attracting more than hundreds of thousands of runners across the country.

The much concluded 37th National MILO Marathon – Manila Qualifiers last 28 July 2013 participated by almost 42,000 runners. This was a remarkable event in the running community and the race was organized by RunRio, Inc.  The Final leg is slated on December 8, 2013 at Mall of Asia, Pasay City, Philippines.

This year top three runners in the 42.195km both for male and female category are: Eric Panique with a time of 2:30:16.72, followed by Ireneo Raquin (2:30:18.24) and Jeson Agravante (2:41:52.80). The top 1 in female category with the time of 3:14:16.09 is Luisa Raterta, followed by Jennylene Nobleza (3:23:24.82), and on third place Geraldine Sealza (3:32:37.05).

Runners in the 42.195km are aiming to qualify or to finish the allotted cut-off time of 6-hours. This is not just a competition but they need to keep their spirit alive. The challenge and obstacles is too tough. Motivating themselves to spare them from any physical injury was far from reality because some may start to have cramps, a shortest of breath, and the thirst. Refueling their energy is a test of self-survival and competing to yourself to break your own PR (personal record) is the only motivation they have. Some runners are motivated to move and go on because they dedicated the race to their beloved someone who passed away, or to their wives and children or just simply for themselves and no matter how far they are running each and every runner has the passion and enthusiasm to finish the race.
